The lone Iris

Winter is here … Some plants like the roses, marigolds, dahlias, poppies and strawberries in our garden survive and thrive . The iris have gone into hibernation, their tuberous selves visible here and there . One single iris has braved the weather and stands upright… Beautiful, brilliant, brave ….imageimageimageimage

New year resolutions to be happier

My new year resolutions are not about less eating and more exercising, that is a war to be fought everyday, in a way that makes you happy and fit. Who said it was easy?? The best things in life are tough, but worth it…..So what does one wish for at the turn of a year??

  1. I wish to treasure every minute of family time even more, shunning social networks even more in the time of togetherness.
  2. Eat what I enjoy, and try tiny portions of sinful food, before I gorge on it, to make sure I love it, instead of piling on food and eating it because children are starving in many parts of the world.
  3. Donate larger sums to people who work for us, and for their children.
  4. Interact mostly with those who make me happy, I’m close to the exit door of life, each moment is a bonus.
  5. Ignore those who ignore me, be ruder than people are to me and nicer that they are too.
  6. Walk out in the middle of a movie and throw a book away if they do not excite me or make me laugh.
  7. Keep loving those in my family who love me and look right through those who do not.
  8. Love with the condition that the loves ones should reciprocate and never betray my trust or love.
  9. Continue being monogamous, there is nothing better or more enjoyable 🙂
  10. Keep writing, because I enjoy it.
  11. Travel more to places far from popular destinations, away from crowded areas.
  12. Keep voicing my opinion, while trying to see the point of view of those I love.
  13. Keep saying ‘I love you’ several times a day to those I actually love.
  14. Make liberal use of blocking options on my phone and social networks.
  15. Look even less in the mirror and look within more…………

My Dr Dolittle moment

It was a bright and sunny morning in the Himalayas. I sat in our gazebo, basking in the sun and listening to the sounds of the sparrows and mynahs around me. Suddenly there was a swoosh and whoosh sound as a large and exotic bird with a bluish body, a black and white head, a yellow beak and a long forked tail flew over me. I blinked, put down the book I was reading and ran out to watch the bird. There is a tree lined path from our home which leads down in a spiral descent a few hundred feet below. I climbed down and a large green bird with a bright red cap on its head flew past me, to perch on an evergreen tree close by. As I started jumping with glee and began photographing it, the blue bird flew around me, with a tiny fruit in it’s beak. I turned around, trying to capture it’s circular path above me and around me. When it perched on a tree near me, I saw there were two of them. I had never seen these birds before in my life and am terrible with nomenclature, but enjoy being around them immensely. There was a rustling in the conifer behind me and a large white kite settled among the branches there, almost hidden from view. Several little multicoloured Great Tit birds flew away from the tree. The Green woodpecker thought I was ignoring it so it flew over me. The blue birds were annoyed that i had looked away and flew around me. I put down my camera and enjoyed the aerial show that was exclusively for me.  When my husband arrived, they all left………He grinned indulgently at my outpouring of excited babble and said..’But they are just birds!!”. This bird show had gone on for two glorious hours…..Thank you God and Mother Nature…..IMG_5749 IMG_5731 IMG_5725 IMG_5692 IMG_5710 IMG_5747 IMG_5752 IMG_5709 IMG_5632 IMG_5678

We search for miracles and ignore the ones that occur around us, everyday….

Halogen air fryer oven

The holiday season is the time for familial bonding and overindulgence in food . One way to enjoy food without excessive calories is to air fry food. My sister and brother-in-law treated us to goodies made in their halogen air fryer oven. Kebabs and grilled snacks can be cooked to perfection. Dust with roasted and ground spices to your taste and enjoy!!imageimageimage

First snowfall

imageimageimageimageimageOur first snowfall this season took place while we were asleep. The snow kissed morning was a beautiful gift and the timing was perfect. While parts of the world celebrate Eid and Christmas, we celebrate all festivals though we are not Muslim or Christian., most of India celebrates all festivals, irrespective of their religion. The lawn, the gazebo and the flowers in our home were snow-kissed . The sun and our gardener wiped away the snow and the plants thrived. Tonight we are going to an international ski resort just above us to experience a white night . God bless the world. Of course I could not resist writing the names of my family on stone, in snow…..image

Winter beauty–Chrysanthemum

Mum or Chrysanthemum flowers are ornamental and reduce indoor pollution. They are used as a garnish, and are used to make tea, soup and wine. They come in various colours and sizes. Another use is that they cheer you up on a cold winter morning.

Forest fire!!!!!

As children, we used to sing….’Fire on a mountain, run, run, run…’. In real life, when there is a fire in a forest on a mountain, there is nowhere to run!!!! The extremely fast rate at which a forest fire spreads and the large area covered by it make it impossible to outrun the fire.
The major causes for a wildfire worldwide are lightening and human carelessness. The damage to the environment and human life is potentially colossal.

What is required for the fire?

  1. An ignition source such as lightening or campfires or a cigarette butt
  2. Combustible or inflammable material such as dried up twigs or vegetation
  3. Oxygen

Governments all over the world have resorted to controlled fires in areas prone to wildfires. Human beings have to be responsible and be careful to prevent the loss to life and property ann save the world for future generations.

Red wattled lapwing

Just another fascinating bird seen by the side of a pond while driving by……it stood still and allowed me to click it from afar…

Himalayan time again

Time for another trip to the now-snow clad mountains in the Himalayas. I wonder what the temperature is, but I’m sure the blizzards will warm my heart….I have enjoyed the best weather there, now it’s time to see ‘weather’ I can be happy in the temporary ice age 🙂
