Touch-me-not plant

While I am ecstatic and widening my horizons every day in a land I am living in for the first time, some memories are being triggered by seeing places and things that remind me of my wonderful childhood. One of the plants I was fascinated by as a child……………is the touch-me-not plant or Mimosa pudica. My parents had shown me this plant as a child and I never tired of gingerly touching just one leaf a day so that the plant would not be harmed and I would still witness a miracle. This plant goes by many names..shy, shrinking, bashful plant. The pretty pink flowers look fragile and beautiful. Imagine my unadulterated joy at seeing this plant growing wild in the never ending meadows near our home…………..Apparently this is mechanism to protect it from grazing animals.

Ghost pepper, Bhut jolokia..hottest plant we have

The Ghost Pepper or Naga pepper or Bhut Jolokia is one of the hottest peppers in the world. It is undeniably the hottest plant we have in our kitchen garden. I was foolhardy enough to taste it…..having seen it for the first time ever, I was totally unaware of its potency………….for the very first (and hopefully the last) time, my tongue was on fire, my ears burned and I could feel steam coming out through my mouth, nose and ears………Yup, that is the hottest I have ever been or felt 🙂

Adopted flowers

imageSometimes we see beautiful flowers by the side of the road.. Rarely we relocate the ones in danger of being discarded to our garden .. And they blossom !!! The flowers actually look happy 😊

Blue dragonfly-Manipur

When was the last time you saw something for the first time? I saw a blue dragonfly today ( a pair of them) near a lake today. They flitted and flirted and hovered……they did everything but pose or hold still……this is the best I could get but in real life I enjoyed their beauty much more….

Sunset .. An end, a beginning

Not every end brings a sense of loss … The magnificent sunset we saw today meant the beginning of an evening to remember, in an area we had never visited before … It was a beautiful moment as the sun dipped down over a lake, and left to light up the other half of the world …

Sun-dance

When the sun plays peek-a-boo through the clouds, when the water bodies sparkle and the greenery adds vibrancy to the landscape, the spirit soars and the soul sings.. You know you’re in paradise and nothing else matters but the person who is by your side , the one who has held your hand through thunderstorms and gloomy days…. Count your blessings, not your money, play with pebbles , not your diamonds … image

Iridescent green bug

imageI did not ever think that a bug would make me smile, stop and click it!!! It is raining .. The lemongrass fragrance fills the air.. My special senses are alive as I listen to the birds, smell the roses, feel the rain on my upturned face.. Even a bug shines with an amazing green that glints as it bounces off the cones in my retina…

Summer ‘vine’

While summer sizzles and screams ‘roast in peace’, all around us, there are the seemingly delicate but tenacious that thrive in the heat, providing the rest with a respite from the rising mercury by just gazing at them……forget summer wine, don’t whine, blossom like this vine 🙂

Adenium-summer blossoms

Adenium was native to Africa and Arabia, hence it can survive when the summer temperatures soar. It has bright and beautiful flowers which do not wilt in the heat. A sight for sore eyes……….

Himalayan Bulbul-bird, nest, eggs!!!

A wonderful person shared the location of a low lying Himalayan bulbul’s nest in shrubbery near her home. She gingerly parted the green leaves in which the bird was nesting, I created a disturbance so the bird flew out of the nest, but remained really close as we admired the beautiful red and white speckled eggs. There were 3 perfect eggs in a nest that looked like a decorated Easter egg basket!! The nest was neatly woven, and  white twine had been used as a border to create a unique design ,  woven into the network of brown twigs….unbelievably beautiful and elegant. After a few moments, we left and the bird returned to the nest and sat on the eggs…
