Passing by ponds and ‘unofficial’ water collections near my home, I see thousands of birds nowadays….some of them pose ūüôā Others offer me a fish they have just caught…more about that later…..

The new generation!!!

Mr Peacock and his family have been visiting and gracing our garden and making our mornings amazing ever since we lived here. The new generation of little peacocks and peahens is here……the gardener says they are here to destroy all our plants. He set up an elaborate network of James Bond inspired pseudo-laser¬†fibers to prevent them from eating the tender shoots of vegetables he has just planted. it worked ..for 3 whole days!!! It is delightful to watch them navigating and beating the fibers (we made sure a material that could not harm them if they brushed past it was used).

Saag ( 4 green leafy veggies in a burst of flavour)

Winter means eating greens to boost up our metabolism and storage of enough iron till the next winter. Healthy food does not have to be tasteless, it can be mouth watering too………here’s how my Mom taught the servants how to make the nutritious food taste amazing……

Take equal amounts of spinach (paalak), methi (fenugreek), Bathua (pigweed) and sarson (mustard) leaves with the stems attached. Wash thoroughly, pluck the leaves off the stems and chop into small pieces. Boil in an open pan or wok or kadhai with some water for an hour. Drain and keep aside. In a pan, take desi ghee, add whole red dried chillies, cumin seeds, chopped garlic and ginger, after 30 seconds , add chopped onions and cook till brown. Add chopped tomatoes and cook well. Add chopped green chillies and stir. Add the drained leaves and stir well over a high flame for 3-5 minutes. Serve hot, with fresh butter.

Most annoying words…

At times, when one is not feeling too good about oneself and the world, people try to make it better, and end up by making you feel worse. Please don’t try to help others when you clearly don’t know what they are feeling and they are not in a mood to be sermonised. Wounds, whether superficial or deep, take a little while to heal. Give people space and time. The words/ phrases that annoy me are…..

  1. Try to meditate……….I need to sort this out, not close my mind and shut it out.
  2. It’s no big deal………..for you maybe, it matters to me.
  3. I was too busy to talk……..nobody is too busy, ever, if they want to talk, I don’t have time to listen to you anymore.
  4. I have a new diet…..not interested in special/ weird diets. Eat all food groups.
  5. What is your weight?…….huh???
  6. How much do you earn??…..hmmm, actually I don’t mind this one since my last pay hike.
  7. How old are you?…………120……
  8. Which parent do you love more?…….Both.
  9. You are active on FB ( accompanied by a snort and smirk)….I’m active outside FB too.
  10. With due respect…….This is right before they disrespect you.
  11. I have gas…..well, let’s attach a few cylinders to you.
  12. I have great taste……….I need proof
  13. I sing very well……….this is normally followed by non stop off key singing.
  14. You operate on real patients ?……..No, on monkeys.
  15. I get along with everyone…………….You think so? ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† The list is endless, but you can choose to be amused rather than annoyed. Healthier for you!!!!img_9551

Selfies–love them, hate them, they are here to stay

Hate selfies? Think again….the artists who made self-portraits before you were born were admired and appreciated for them. Since we all can’t paint, we let the camera capture us. There are some wonderful things about a selfie! What is travel without memories frozen in time, golden moments captured forever?

You think this is too much??? There is a contraption— a Selfie stick that synchronises with and holds your iPhone at a distance to click from further away….get it now!!!

Airplant!!!! our home

Tillandsia is native to Central and South America, and the West Indies. I have seen this plant for the first time and brought 2 of them home. They do not need soil, water, or any maintenance!! At night they convert carbon dioxide into oxygen..the prettiest and effective air purifiers……we have them suspended on a tiny ring with a loop, they can be shifted to the garden or indoors at night with the greatest ease ūüôā

Magic of the twilight zone

As daylight fades and darkness descends

Sinister shadows appear friendly as they blend

A magical time envelopes the soul

Elves and fairies work their magic to make us whole

A sigh escapes from parched lips

That have waited for so long

For someone to sing their song

The moments after sunset are the biggest gift

They  soothe, they heal  a broken heart and spirit

All doubts and monsters dissipate

In that wondrous twilight

Stay up with a loved one till the first light……

Pool party -our garden

Birds do not fear me….according to the offspring, nobody is intimidated by or fears me….I think I should give up trying! My encounters of the feathery kind began in early childhood, when an eagle swooped down and plucked away the food I was about to eat img_0608from my hands…while it was making me healthier by robbing my lunch, it rested its weight on my shoulder for a brief moment…….the whole school was in the courtyard but it chose me…..after the terror and hunger pangs diminished, I watched and admired the flight of the bird as it came back to glide effortlessly over me (on a full stomach!). These Oriental white eye birds are my morning companions as they bathe in the makeshift water bowls I have placed for them in our garden….how can a day not be awesome after an early morning party-in-a-pool???

Birds of paradise flowers, Manipur, India

There are those moments when you feel like you have been given a wonderful surprise that stops you in your tracks and makes you thank the powers-that-be for the gift that surpasses anything material……these flowers turned up around a corner and took my breath away……they¬†seemed to be surviving all on their own, in the midst of weeds….img_1411 img_1413 img_1415
