An extraordinary lady in an ordinary world

There is a Mall at the Delhi-Gurgaon border in India called the Ambience Mall. I have visited it often in the past few years, and came away a few times thinking that I was a part-time ladies toilet-cleaner there !!! The washrooms are visited by the crowds and the seat generally left with a few drops of left-over micturition fluid ( ladies toilet)….the toilet rolls are depleted rapidly and replaced very slowly, so much so that I carry some in my handbag from home. The floor near the washbasins is sprayed with water…..I walk gingerly as I do not want my femur neck to be fractured. That was until today……a wonderful lady has kept the row of stalls on the ground floor clean and dry and wipes the seat and floor before any lady enters the toilet!!!! She manages the never-ending line of ladies entering and leaving and works tirelessly…..I went back in to thank her and tell her that she is extraordinary …that nobody has ever done what she is doing, with a smile on her face..that I was lucky to have met her. I asked her for a feedback form, she did not know that they existed!!! I asked her if I could click her picture and write about her….she agreed, and lowered her eyes, standing still, before she took off again to wipe the toilet seat before another lady went in…..I wish we could all appreciate her and clean up after ourselves… I always do that…..

I went to Ambi Mall after that and tried different washrooms….I also went to a 5-star hotel and airport in the same area and used the washroom there…..the washrooms, irrespective of their location were neither dry nor spotlessly clean…when I pointed in out in the otherwise classy hotel, the cleaning lady on duty did clean it….I went back to the washroom this lady cleans…yesterday, after 4 months….I saw the back of a lady vigorously scrubbing a washroom before a lady used it ( there was a small line of ladies there as the Mall was very crowded yesterday)….and went into the other washroom to clean it….I called out….’Hasina Banu, it can only be you who is cleaning the area so well”….she emerged, with a smile on her face……she told me that people had sought her out to recognise her work, she had received an award and appreciation and been shown her picture on my blog!!!!! As I thanked her again for being wonderful, she said…’Thank you..to me!!!! I asked for a picture, she smiled this time….and I clicked a random picture of one of the washroom she looks after…this is a washroom in a busy mall in India, busier with the holiday season…..she is my Hero for 2016….

iPhone 6s vs iPhone 7

Our child has realised that we have scientific minds that fortunately/ unfortunately need proof for anything and everything…. since we have 5 iPhones in the family (3-6s,2-7), he demonstrated that the camera in the 7 is far superior to the 6s, especially when the surrounding illumination is less…. this pic was taken in our home…

Mr Walker Waka

Ducks fascinate me…most non-slithery living beings do……when a duck walks on water, it’s not merely a walk…it is a show which other beings watch ….this one took off while the others gazed at it….some with pride, others with envy, while some pretended not to hear the splashing and quacking….are we like that…..some praise, others ignore…while a few envy while some criticize the same achievement??? The song playing in my mind while watching it?? “I want to break free”………………..

Sacrifice at the time of bloodshed

Gaining independence from the British Raj in Indian history was an extremely important event. It was a period of joyous celebrations. For some, it is still accompanied by the painful memories of the partition of the country and the widespread communal riots on both sides of the India-Pakistan border, which left innumerable loss of life in its wake, along with massive destruction of property which left millions homeless.

During this period, there is one story which comes to mind, a story of a great sacrifice and a close and selfless friendship. Two of my late teachers, Dr M S Grewal and Dr R P Chopra were posted in Rawalpindi. Dr Chopra had managed to obtain, with great difficulty, two air tickets from Rawalpindi to New Delhi, one for himself and the other for his wife. He took the tickets to Dr Grewal and offered them to him. Dr Grewal refused, as it was not certain if any delay would allow the people left behind to escape with their lives. Dr Chopra was adamant and said that since Dr Grewal was a Sikh, he could be spotted from a distance, thus there was a higher risk to his and his wife’s life. Dr Chopra said he could mingle with the crowds and subsequently manage to escape. Dr Grewal gave in and flew safely to Delhi with his wife.

It was unimaginable that anybody who lived through that time could make such a gesture. People had fled in the face of death, leaving their families behind, some looked for their next of kin for years afterwards. Dr Chopra contacted his friends in the Police department and the Army and was taken in their vehicles to cross the border to India by road, a process that took several days filled with danger and tension. The two remained close friends for life. Both of them were wonderful human beings and great teachers-not of medicine alone, but how to live life. This story has been an inspiration to me and I have taken the liberty to use their actual names, may God bless their souls.

This story was narrated to me by Dr M S Grewal himself, who said…’This Ram Prakash Chopra is an amazing human being’.

Spicy holiday breakfast with ghost pepper

The Ghost Pepper remains one of the hottest peppers in the world…..the ‘watered down varieties’ are sold throughout the world to make people feel good that they have survived the deadly pepper. For the authentic kind, it has to be plucked off the plant!!! we have a few plants which are beautiful to look at. This morning, as the family sat down for a breakfast laden with goodies…..the ghost pepper added a different dimension to tantalise the taste buds…..the auditory canal was outlined as the steam escaped from any available orifice…..and the heat was felt by the larynx and the oropharynx and the tongue……the metabolism boost and aroma were incomparable….the hot chickpea curry and pooris and yogurt and milk were relished along with almonds, figs, walnuts…….and whole wheat halwa…….
