Home and hearth-good for the heart

The homes that supposedly have less, actually have the health food that people in so-called developed areas pay through their nose for….and remain deprived of the simplest and freshest food. In the North-eastern part of India, the poor and rich have enough to eat (as told to me by the villagers who live there). The land is rich in nutrients, vegetables, fruits  and spices grow in the wild…livestock fed on the lush greenery is of the best quality. The village folk cook over an open fire that cooks the best….slow-cooking, with minimal salt and spices…….all the meat has vegetables in it, and herbs….

Stir, toss food…Green Bee eater, our garden

Mornings in our garden are full of life and colour and the intoxicating smell of  roses……today a Green Bee Eater flew away after posing for a few pictures, took a dive to the green chili plants and came back to the exact same spot within my range, with a protein-laden meal!!! It shook and stirred the insect, re-positioned it and tossed it up in the sky, and swallowed it with relish…….Breakfast is the most important meal, isn’t it?? 🙂

Spice up your day-spicy tea

Tea is an established source of amazing ingredients which energise and uplift us. Adding spice to tea makes it even more useful and tasty. The simplest spice tea for me is…..A tea with freshly minced ginger, green cardamom, fennel seeds, cloves, black pepper and tulsi/basil leaves.

IMG_4250 IMG_4252 IMG_4261

Take all the whole spices…ginger, green cardamom, fennel seeds, black pepper and cloves and coarsely crush/ grind them. Add to a 50-50 mixture of boiling water and milk. Add the tulsi leaves and allow it to boil for a minute. Add the tea leaves, or a tea bag. I prefer the tea bag as I’m not a tea drinker, I’m more of a spice lover. Darjeeling tea leaves or tea bags add to the flavour and health benefits. Turn off the heat and cover for two minutes. Strain, sip, enjoy. If heaven had a drink, this would be it. The health benefits are numerous, but it’s the taste and rejuvenation that makes it so enjoyable. Do not add sugar, if you need to drink sweet tea, add honey or jaggery….can it get better???? Only if you drink it with someone you love 🙂

Social networking, boon or bane

Social networking has caught on and is here to stay. If used wisely it can be a boon. Free wi-fi is generally available across the globe today. Hotels, hospitals, universities offer it to allow communication between people who work there as well as visitors. How do we optimize our time and energy spent on various sites?

  1. Messages can be passed on instantly and easily to people who you do not want to call. It saves time and gets the work done.
  2. Paper is saved, which is good for the environment.
  3. If your child is away, it keeps you in touch and allows free communication, as all universities have wi-fi.
  4. Pictures and documents can be shared at the touch of a button.
  5. Important emails can be accessed and replied to immediately.
  6. Groups to pass on laughs and smiles disperse happiness.
  7. Help can be sought from the authorities or family if needed.
  8. Girls feel safer traveling alone.
  9. Since zillions of pictures are shared, people work out more to look good and adopt a healthier lifestyle !!!!!
  10. Distance is a number, connections and reconnections are generally pleasant.                                Disadvantages, especially for teenagers:
  11. Children alienate themselves from the real world to interact constantly with ‘perceived friends’ in the virtual world.
  12. Phone numbers, location, schedules are known by undesirable elements.
  13. Chats and videos are used without any discretion or fear of repercussions.
  14. A disconnect with the real world leads to unreal expectations from relationships and life. Internet addiction is well known.
  15. Popularity, or misconceptions about it, damage many a psyche.
  16. Harassment, stalking is easy as the vulnerability of a person is visible.
  17. It is a predator’s playground. A lot of children are lured by pedophiles who take advantage of their innocence.
  18. Blackmail can be used, as the innocent are unsuspecting and trusting.
  19. Passwords are asked for to access bank accounts.
  20. There are scams that offer money and dupe the innocent or inexperienced.                                    What do we do?? We can educate our children about the hazards of the internet and social media. Exchange of information and a few laughs shared are priceless. If used with a little caution, there is so much to gain. There are times when we must ‘switch off’ the virtual world and turn to look at and connect with those around us, as these are the people who make up our world.

English is not our mothertongue :)

We manage to communicate in our special brand of English, which is a blend that only we understand! We do get the point across, so it should not bother anyone, or should it?????

I want a Pumplate….Maybe the Latter head will be nicer….if we all rush to this printer, there will be a Stempede 🙂

Six people on two wheels !!!!!! It’s a record

Need for speed ? Need for a son ? Having seen many two wheelers with five people on them, I was still shocked to see six!!!! Looking at the picture closely, it seems like a family with 3 daughters and one son, who is the youngest of the four children. This bodes well perhaps, as the quest for the Y chromosome seems to have met with success. Or does it? Traveling on a highway with six people on a two wheeler redefines risk.

None of them are wearing a helmet, I do hope the police catch them, making them rethink this mode of travel…..some may say it’s a necessity, but they are a traffic hazard, more to themselves than others…. I’m glad there is no Guinness Record for this, nothing justifies it. Some may argue that their resources maybe limited…..maybe they can wear helmets? shouldn’t the family size have been limited in that case? Silent prayer…..Keep safe and stop this torture of the bike and risk to your lives.

Yellow lentils

Lentils are cooked all over the world and are an excellent and inexpensive source of proteins, including amino acids, Vitamin B1,dietary fibre, folate and minerals. Depending on the variety, they take a variable time to cook. The easiest and one of the tastiest lentils to cook is the yellow lentil ( dhooli moong dal ).

Take yellow moong dal or lentils ( 1:3-4 ratio of lentils to water ) in a pressure cooker, add salt and 1/2 a tsp of turmeric powder, and cook till 1 whistle goes off. Turn off the heat, let it cool and open the cooker.

IMG_2892 IMG_2893

For 250 gms of yellow moong dal, you need 2 small onions, one large tomato, 2 cloves of garlic, 0.5 cms of ginger, 1 tsp of turmeric powder, 1 tsp of cumin, 1/2-1 tsp of red chilli powder or 1 green chilli. In a pan, add one 1 tbsp of ghee, add the cumin when hot.

IMG_2894 IMG_2895

Add the chopped garlic, after 20 seconds add ginger, stir and cook for 20 seconds.

IMG_2897 IMG_2898

Add the onions and cook till brown.

IMG_2899 IMG_2900

Add the chopped tomatoes, cook well and add the spices.

IMG_2901 IMG_2903

Add the cooked lentils, stir for 1 minute. It’s ready to eat ! You can garnish with chopped coriander.

Party patterns-humans and birds

The Oriental White eye birds are gracious and kind enough to host their pool parties in our garden. While they are delightful to watch, one ca not but help noticing the patterns that emerge…similar to human parties……some of the categories of party-goers are…..

  • The Clown….they are crowd pullers who entertain… this bird who was dancing to his own tune……

  • The watchers…..they watch anyone who is different…..and alienate them, make them uncomfortable and leave….like these white-eyes watching the magpie….it left eventually….

  • The couples…they go to corners to celebrate on their own…..

  • The foodies and drinkers…..they stay around the food and drinks…..

  • The gossip mongers…..none are spared…..stories are being exchanged here….

  • The self-appointed Saviours …they don’t join the craziness, but watch those who are having fun and decide when they need saving from themselves… the birds on the periphery….

  • The almost-leavers ….they stand almost outside but do not leave..they watch with remorse and resentment and want to be called back inside…..meanwhile The Show-offs demonstrate their diving skills to all those who are interested…or not!…this bird on the grass waited till everyone left….

  • The BFFs ….they keep a close watch on the friend who always over-indulges…and protect….

  • Those who want to network…instead of focusing on those close to them….they seek and search for important people….

  • The groupies…..some from a larger, noisier group…others look on, waiting to join…..

  • The nonchalant… there anyone a 100% like that….if you find them…..keep them…they have fun, are polite, don not follow anybody…….

  • The Outsider….a loner….watching with indifference? Interest? you decide…..

I do not know their names

I do love their flying games

As they glint and gleam

As if in a dream

Kissed by the rays of the sun

They are second to none……

Words- deadly weapon or Cupid’s arrow

  • Words can be a deadly weapon or Cupid’s arrow.
  • Make sure you choose wisely and please or hurt intentionally!
  • Use words whichever way you want…..decide if you value the person and relationship enough to tread lightly….if you are really lucky, you can say what you want, without editing/ filters…and accept it from the significant other.
  • You need people who are brutally honest with you and expect that from you, Since everyone is not that lucky, here is how you can tread lightly ……
  • When a person could say….your hair is so thin and wavy, it’s unmanageable, if they are wise they will say…..Your hair is soft like a baby’s and naturally styled.
  • Instead of telling someone they look terrible in an outfit, you could tell them that they look better in other clothes.
  • Instead of saying are becoming overweight….you could say….let’s start working out together.
  • Instead of telling someone they have ugly feet, you could tell them that a beautiful bird like a peacock has feet that don’t match it’s beauty.
  • You could but them a deodorant and perfume instead of telling them they stink…..I do not agree with this one! Hygiene people!!!! you need to clean, bathe, put on fresh clothes……
  • You could choose television shows and movies together instead of telling the other they watch ****

If you have the luxury of separate closets, washrooms and cars……your relationship can not be harmed…say whatever you want!!! just make sure you compliment more than you criticize!

PS….please customize your words to your own and your partner’s needs….do not listen to anyone 🙂
