Healthiest chocolate

The most sought after food in the world is……….chocolate!!! No wonder, since it has chemicals that are mood-lifters and give one the feeling of being in love….chocolate has Phenylethylamine which imparts the feeling of love and passion, and tryptophan causes the secretion of serotonin which uplifts the mood …………….when something does that to you, and is delicious…….there is no downside. Wait!!! to be healthy it is recommended that dark chocolate should contain a minimum of 70% cocoa……below that, you are loading up on sugar and milk solids…….the 85% and higher percentages of cocoa in chocolate are supposed to be the healthiest, but many people do not enjoy the taste….I love the higher percentages of cocoa…….it is about time that we stop calling the white form of chocolate as chocolate……..indulge, enjoy, the world is a better place with chocolate in it…..

Bloom to Doom

All living beings are meant to flourish

While plants and trees may flower-ish

Humans are known to reach their most attractive stage

Just before they reach a certain girth and age

The downward spiral does begin

As the body and soul wither within

If one looks closely enough

As they age, they soar above

Those that are caught up in the material world

Life and experiences well learned

Have added a certain allure

As superficiality does blur

Celebrate the aged, those who know how to be alive

Learn from them how to cast away the disguise

So that we can each agree

To shed our masks and be free…….

Peas to you…raw green peas with tomato=double the health and taste

Green peas are not expensive, though they are packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients. They have the advantage of being protected in the pod , hence they are safely eaten raw, which is the tastiest and healthiest way to eat them. A polyphenol called coumestrol in peas is believed to protect against stomach cancer. They also contain saponins which help to fight against diabetes, high cholesterol and cancer.

They have a low glycemic index and are high in fibre and proteins. The phenolic acids like ferulic and caffeic acid along with flavonols like catechin and epicatechin in peas enhance their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory quality. They contain omega-3 fats (alpha-linolenic acid or ALA). if you thought that was not enough, they also have beta carotene and Vitamin E. The flowers on the pea plant are beautiful as well. Apart from being good for us, they are good for the soil on which they grow!!!!!

To get the most benefit from peas, shell a cup of them, add a raw chopped tomato and a dash of salt and fresh lemon juice……try it now. The benefits of raw tomato have been discussed earlier in another post….eat a bowl a day.

Goldenrod—Tires, Tea, Herbal Medicines

Goldenrod does look like a golden rod!! It is the state flower of several states in the USA. The leaves and seeds are edible and the plant is used in herbal medicines and tea. Thomas Edison used this plant for extracting rubber. Henry Ford gifted a car to Edison with tires made from Goldenrod!!! (source-wikipedia). It grows in the wild in the Indian Himalayas, each tiny flower shines like gold from afar…..

The Love-drama on our chikoo tree

Our chikoo tree is level with the first floor terrace…..birds somehow like to perch here, despite my camera and me staring at them….some even come here and pose awhile…..this morning, a pair of birds perched in front of my nose and approached each other….they got closer, just when it appeared that they were going to spend their lives together………….a third bird appeared, lurking and watching them…..although the space where the two love-birds were perched was narrow, the villain joined them!!! they tried to stay there, but had to fly away…..soon there were none……….which was good, since it was time for me to get to work!  Why do some living beings have to ‘pile on’, to forcibly try to pry others apart???

Mr Water-Monster and the Puppy-dog

The simplest, everyday objects make the best toys for puppies and babies alike. My sister and brother-in-law have an adorable, though ferocious looking puppy-dog (yes, it is a term I use!!)…..he loves to play fetch and football  and gallops at a mind-boggling speed. When he was playing football with us, the water sprinkler came on……Mr L-the-puppy-dog turned around in mid-air with the grace of a gazelle and lunged towards it….he sniffed, examined, felt the spray…..and then the water-dance began,….it is poetry in motion when Mr L wrestles with, caresses, consumes and attacks Mr Water-Monster………..he is a delight to watch….at the end of the exercise, he dries off and is clean again, all by himself…..he relaxes and stretches and has his one-on-one massage and petting sessions with us……happiness is made of this 🙂

Our orange tree

In our backyard a solitary orange tree has stood for over 20 years. It’s special because my sister planted an orange seed taken from an orange she had just eaten. We made fun of her and were amazed when a tree took root from that seed. This tree bore a sackful of perfect oranges after 10 years of standing there. The oranges from this tree ripen in bathes of 10! Each year it produces about a hundred oranges. I had the pleasure of eating the last of this crop this year.

Night-flowering Jasmine, full of natural cures

We installed a flood light to see the Night-Jasmine tree in our garden at night, since the flowers shed at sunrise….This plant is native to parts of Asia. Every part of the beautiful tree is edible and full of antioxidants and amazing chemicals. The fragrant flowers fall through the day and last only for a day. When we wake up in the morning, the carpet of white flowers with bright orange-red centers greet us. The flowers, bark,  seeds, stem and fruit of the tree are said to cure viral, fungal and parasitic diseases, and contains substances which protect the liver and boost immunity. The leaves have been used to cure sciatica and arthritis in traditional medicine.

The tree sheds all its flowers by early morning!! The fragrance remains for a while though….
