Orchids on trees, Manipur, India

The land where orchids bloom on trees…

Where paddy fields are watered by the heavens above

Where wildlife coexists with humans

Where waterfalls cascade and lilies blossom

Such a place does exist

It is called the North East..,

Crown of thorns or Christ plant

Legend has it that the Crown of thorns worn by Christ was formed by the stems of this plant. It is a plant with red flowers and thorny stems, with a mildly poisonous sap that acts as an irritant when it comes in contact with the skin. A beautiful flowering shrub, it has flowers in different colours, formed by two petals.

The bagman

it was just another day in the hospital… Until a gentleman walked in for a consultation. He was moving around with a bag on his head and appeared completely at ease. When asked about the bag, he casually replied that if he needed to be admitted, he had all that he needed with him… On his head. He did not want to bother anyone and was comfortable carrying his belongings with him. I think he should get the ‘coolest dude’ award. Wake up, people … Being cool is not based on what you drive or wear or your vocabulary, it is based on how relaxed you are when you do something that others may snigger at…image

Words….for love and hate

When we like/ admire/ adore someone our tone, our words are tender, loving, chosen with care…..when we despise/ abhor/ hate…even a compliment gives away our disgust/ aloofness/ annoyance….most times, there is no relevance or logic!!!!

For instance :

Love                                                Sans love

  • A good looking man —- Hot, handsome                            Weird!! Effeminate ( No logic!)
  • A Beautiful woman——–Gorgeous, flawless                   Full of herself, conceited!
  • A brainy child—————-Gifted, brilliant                          A know-it-all, show-off
  • A wonderful house——  Home, retreat                           Product of misdeeds/ corruption
  • High-pitched voice——–Angelic                                          Whiny, annoying
  • An artist————————Amazing                                          Good-for-nothing!
  • Meticulousness ————-Perfectionist                                   OCD !!!

And so on and so forth……Choose your words, if they please/ hurt, let it because you want them to…not because you have a poor knowledge of the language you express yourself in!!

Spicy peas

Winter brings a bumper harvest of peas….they are delicious and healthy..one does get tired of the same way of eating them, though. We mixed them with a little ghee, cumin, garam masala, chat masala and green chilli and stirred them in a pan for a minute….eat them steaming hot!!!

In winter , we drink it with a few new flavours added to it….take a bunch of spinach and bathua from your kitchen garden, wash and cut into small fragments. Cook with a little water. Take buttermilk….. in a mixer, add the leaves and roasted cumin, a pinch of roasted and ground mustard seeds, finely grated ginger, green chili and rock salt. Blend….you will be surprised at how yummy this drink is……try it!

Our Loofah plant!!

Spongy, cellulose-filled vegetables and vines have been used for ages to get the Loofah or Luffa….for scrubbing the body/ and or floors !!!! In our kitchen garden some ridge gourds climbed high on the gooseberry tree and were left there….lo and behold!! they dried and formed seeds….leaving the loofah part for me to experiment with….if you see my skin looking well-scrubbed (shiny and a little red)…you know why that is 🙂 we have 5 more of these!! the seeds have been planted for a fresh crop….

The winter chutney

Winter is the best time to indulge your taste buds….vegetables and fruits thrive in the Indian winter…..add spice to the greens with a chutney! Take some coriander and mint leaves (fresh off the plant–grow them in a flower pot if you do not have a garden), wash, chop coarsely, add a little garlic, green chili, rock salt, roasted cumin……grind so that there is a granular consistency. Squeeze some lime juice and add to any dish….

Optional-you can add ground black pepper, ginger, chat masala.

Cauliflower and peas

An easy and tasty method to cook a dish with cauliflower and peas…both are full of health benefits…..Grate cauliflower on the large-aperture grater…..shell peas so that they are half-to one-third the volume of the cauliflower. Take a pan, add a little desi ghee, add cumin, garlic, onions, a pinch of freshly ground turmeric and green chili, cook well. Add the cauliflower and peas, cook till it is a little tender but not too soft, add salt and a pinch of garam masala. The best feature of the dish is that it does not take much time or effort, yet it is a taste-and-health packed dish!
