Cappadocia is one of the most unique places in the world. The landscape is made up largely of a ‘moonscape’ or ‘fairyland’. Apparently, the millions of slender, stark, furrowed mountain peaks are a result of hardened ancient volcanic eruptions. The local population carved out churches, hotels and entire underground cities in the ash, which gradually hardened to a rock-like consistency, and are preserved even today. Another wonderful and unique feature is the hot air ballooning before sunrise, which has been described as one of the best in the world.
Hundreds of balloons are launched into the pre-sunrise sky. A collective gasp is heard as people watch this spectacle, open-mouthed. Each balloon carries 12-20 people. The people who operate them are experts, and take you on a one hour trip over the terrain to witness the splendour below. They take you down to the side of a tall peak, then take you up just as you feel there is no way to escape a crash.
Take a flight form Istanbul to Kayseri, which is the nearest airport. Book your hotel in Cappadocia in advance, they will pick you up and drop you at the airport. Similarly, the balloon companies will pick you up and drop you at the hotel. Watching the sun rise above this city is an experience in itself. The experts land the balloon ( with all of you in it) on the back of a truck/ lorry!!!!!!!! The oooohs and aaaahs of the passengers make it even more exciting. Wait—there is a certificate/ medal and champagne waiting for you at the end.
Cheers, don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
