Miracle of Kedarnath Temple, Himalayas

The Kedarnath Temple is a temple at about 12,000 feet in the Himalayas in India. In 2013, there were massive floods and large scale destruction surrounding the temple. Miraculously, a large boulder positioned itself behind the temple and diverted the flow of turbulent water, stones and debris on either side of the temple, saving it from destruction. Every structure was destroyed for miles around the temple. The boulder stands testimony to this event,as it has not been moved. The temple has a triangular Shivling in the inner part of the temple. There is a statue of Nandi carved from stone outside the temple. Any wish by a pilgrim who visits the temple is said to be granted by Lord Shiva. The temple can be reached by a trek of about 39 kms from Gaurikund, or a 7 minute helicopter ride.

it started to snow while we were there… A frenzied collective prayer from all present resulted in instant sunshine.. If you are a believer, it was a miracle…

The helicopter ride ….

Path to heaven !!

In the last village on the Indo-Tibet/ China border, is a village called Mana. At the place this village ends, one can see a rocky path going towards the mountains in the distance. It appears to have been fashioned within the mountains. It is called the path to heaven. According to Hindu Mythology, the Pandavas went on this route to reach heaven!! Walking on this path takes one on a difficult trek upwards for 8 kilometers. At this point, one seems to have reached the clouds, there is nothing but mist all around. I guess one has to wait to die to go beyond this point which is at an extremely high altitude. A beautiful and serene path, that allows one to reflect on life and connect with one’s soul…..

Super moon, March 19,2011

IMG_0382 IMG_0383 IMG_0385I was boarding an international flight, excited and happy. Sitting in the lounge, I looked at the television…and sat bolt upright, It was being announced that it was a day that a Super Moon would be sighted, an ongoing heated discussion was taking place as to whether natural disasters were more likely to occur on the days of a Super Moon!!!!! The super moon on that day,  March 19th, 2011 was ‘extra special’ as it was a ‘super perigee moon’ which is seen once in almost two decades.

I used the best tool at hand…’Google Baba’ to find out what a super moon was—it directed me to Wikipedia which said that “A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth. The technical name is the perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system. The term “supermoon” is not astronomical, but originated in modern astrology. The association of the Moon with both oceanic and crustal tides has led to claims that the supermoon phenomenon may be associated with increased risk of events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, but the evidence of such a link is widely held to be unconvincing.”

I chose to be unconvinced about a super moon causing disasters and to fly to watch the super moon with my family in another country to take pictures of the moon.

Saraswati River at Mana gorge, India

In Hindu mythology, as Ved Vyasa was recounting the Mahabharata to Lord Ganesha, the river Saraswati was disturbing them as it was too noisy. Lord Ganesha and Ved Vyasa had agreed that the tale would not be narrated more than once. Ved Vyasa made the mighty Saraswati river disappear underground ( a fact that has been confirmed by topographical analysis now ). The huge volume of water in the River Saraswati at a place called Mana Gorge in Mana village is the exact place where the huge volume of the turbulent Saraswati are not visible on the other side of the gorge. There is a permanent rainbow over the river at this point!!!!! The two ancient caves where Ved Vyasa and Lord Ganesha sat down for this epic historical saga are also nearby, I have written about them in separate blogs.

The waters of the Saraswati River at Mana Gorge …..the sheer volume and sound and the permanent rainbow are breathtakingly beautiful……

Beyond the gorge, the cascading and turbulent waters disappear….there is no water visible…..though we searched for a glimpse…the sound disappears too…

Scorpion plant or Stinging Nettle

The plant called ‘Bichoo booti’ or the Scorpion Plant is so named because any contact with it makes the skin stings like a scorpion sting. This plant is also called the Stinging Nettle, and is found in abundance over the Himalayas. Surprisingly, the locals have successfully used it as a rich source of proteins, Vitamins A and C, Iron, minerals and fiber!!!!! They take the precaution of handling it carefully and soaking it for half an hour in water before cooking it, it’s wonderfully nutritious and is free…

As you can see in the pictures below, the plant is covered with bristles/ thorns that actually inject Histamine and other irritants into the skin like a million hypodermic needles. It causes intense itching, swelling, redness, pain and lasts for 1-3 days. Miraculously, everywhere this plant, a plant called the Dock plant or other leafy plants with tiny red flowers grow, which neutralise the effects of the Stinging Nettle!!!

The leafy plant shown below is also called ‘Spinach’ and is eaten along with the Stinging Nettle.

The Bichoo Booti is used as food and for the production of a fibre like cotton or linen. The advantage is that the Bichoo Booti grows in the wild and does not need any care or insecticides / pesticides. It is truly a miracle of nature that the plant which causes an intense allergic reaction grows next to plants that can neutralise its toxic effects…….The Himalayas are a truly blessed place…

Sackful of Apples daily–above 10,000 feet

Somewhere in the mountains of Kashmir, India, grows a solitary apple tree, believed to be ancient and ‘blessed’. It is the only tree which has survived, for centuries, and is said to have been planted by a learned man who meditated there. This tree bears the most delicious fruit.

The apple tree produces a large quantity of fruits throughout the year. A sackful of about ninety to a hundred and twenty apples are plucked from the tree on a daily basis!!!!!!!!!!!!

Flights of fancy

In my mind’s eye…I fly

Uninhibitedly, unselfconsciously

Sometimes solo, generally with an ally

My wingspan is unisex, unisize!!

I coined a term! a smile is my prize

I have learned to love me and mine

Intensely, passionately, unconditionally

To separate oxygen from carbon dioxide

To talk to birds, bees, clouds, hills and streams

And the magical rainbow

I love my fat, my feet,

My crooked teeth

My wit (or lack of it)

I curse, I speak without filters

Only to those I care deeply for

I can not be defined

As a woman/man/beast

I am a molecule, I am the galaxy

I exist….or do I???

I do not care how people see me

Because that reflects their perception

Not me, for I exist in my own stratosphere

Without prejudice, malice or fear

I blabber on, interesting to some

I scream, I giggle, I am immature,

Unsophitiscated…..I spell it wrong

I never tried to make a name

Connections were made, sans any pretence

I have no time for those who do not have time for me

I love those who collide with me, who teach, guide and

Take the trouble to explain, criticise, encourage

I am afraid to leave this universe

But excited that I will find her on the other side…

An armchair, a couch, a car, a carpet

Are my launchpad….and my lunch-pad

I eat, I dance, I am alive….

Till the day I die…..
