A feature seen quite commonly among the girls and women of northern India is the ‘Undercover’ look…they remain under the cover of clothing that hides their face. There are apparently two reasons…
- The intense heat and sunburn in summer are avoided as the face and upper body are covered.
- Historical reason…I was told by my grandmother ages ago that invaders generally occupied Delhi and the nearby areas. Pretty girls were abducted, so the practise of covering the face and body with a large piece of cloth which imparted a ‘sack-like’ look was chosen to save the women from the gaze of invaders…..
